Samaritans: Ireland and the United Kingdom
Free, 24 hours, on 116 123, which is the number reserved at European Union level for emotional support helplines. Email jo@samaritans.org. You do not have to be suicidal to make contact.
988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline: United States
Call or text 988, 24 hours, free and confidential. Veterans can dial 988 and press 1.
Telefonseelsorge: Germany
Free and anonymous, 24 hours, on 0800 111 0 111 and 0800 111 0 222. A separate line for children and young people runs on 0800 111 0 333.
113 Zelfmoordpreventie: Netherlands
Free and anonymous on 113 or 0800 0113, by telephone or online chat, 24 hours.

Statistics and guidance
Eurostat
The statistical office of the European Union. It publishes deaths by suicide for every member state on a common definition, which is the basis of the country comparison on Data and research. Its most recent release, in September 2026, covers 2023.
WHO Regional Office for Europe
World Health Organization data and guidance for the 53 countries of the European Region, including the safe messaging guidance that shapes how this site is written. The Region figures quoted on this site come from its 2025 publications.
European Alliance Against Depression
The network behind the four-level community intervention described on Data and research, and the publisher of the European guidelines for journalists reporting on suicide. Its depression information service and self-management tool are available in several European languages.
